Timeline
- 1052–1065Canterbury · KentIn 1052 he became Archbishop of Canterbury while still holding the see of Winchester; this double tenure and the papal non-recognition of its validity kept him at the center of church controversy for years. During his tenure he was closely tied to Edward the Confessor and the Godwin family, and was the most powerful cleric of late Anglo-Saxon England.
- 1066–1072Westminster · LondonIn January 1066 he presided over the funeral of Edward the Confessor and crowned Harold Godwinson. After the defeat at Hastings, William the Conqueror saw him as a symbol of the legitimacy question; after Lanfranc succeeded in 1070 he was formally deposed, held under house arrest until his death in 1072.
