During the Jianyan era Jin forces repeatedly invaded south from Shandong and Zhang Rong intercepted them with his fleet. In Shaoxing 1, besieged by Jin forces, Zhang Rong led the Shandong militia south along the Qing River, via Tuotan Lake and Yancheng to Tongzhou, then turned to Suotou Lake to build a stockade, with the Jin in close pursuit.
  2. 1131Suotou Lake · JiangsuTo remove concerns after crossing the Yangtze, Jin left commander Wanyan Chang led over ten thousand troops and vessels from Taizhou into Suotou Lake, aiming to annihilate Zhang Rong's forces in one blow. Zhang Rong met him with dozens of boats; seeing only a few large warships in front and the rest small craft, he feigned defeat, abandoned his boats to land, and lured the Jin into shallow water and mud.
  3. 1131Suotou Lake to Chuzhou · JiangsuZhang Rong's forces counterattacked, capturing and killing over five thousand including Jin general Pucha Hubalu, with uncountable numbers drowned or mired in mud. Wanyan Chang fled to Chuzhou and crossed the Huai northward. Zhang Rong recaptured Taizhou, and the counties of Huaidong Circuit returned to Song. Suotou Lake was renamed Desheng (Victory) Lake, and Zhang Rong accepted amnesty as prefect of Taizhou.
