  1. 1618–1621Istanbul · Ottoman EmpireAfter his uncle Mustafa I was deposed in 1618, Osman II acceded as a son of Ahmed I at the age of fourteen. He gradually took personal rule, dissatisfied with the growing power of the janissary corps, and began planning military reform and demobilization.
  2. 1621–1622Chocim (present-day Ukraine) · Polish–Lithuanian borderlandsIn 1621 he personally campaigned against the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, failing to take Chocim; the expedition exposed the army's failings. After returning he planned to reorganize the janissaries, recruit instead from Anatolia and elsewhere, and relocate eastward (accounts include moving the capital to Damascus) to distance himself from the sipahi forces, sharpening conflicts with the corps and the ulema.
  3. 1622Istanbul · Ottoman EmpireIn May 1622 the janissaries and ulema revolted; Osman II was deposed and imprisoned in the Yedikule fortress, then promptly executed. His uncle Mustafa I was briefly restored (1622–1623), after which his brother Murad IV succeeded, and the empire entered a new round of palace struggles.
