Timeline

  1. 1243–1250Kyoto · Imperial CourtGo-Fukakusa was a son of Emperor Go-Saga, born in 1243, and ascended the throne in 1246 at the arrangement of the retired Emperor Go-Saga, changing the era name to Kangen. During his childhood, court governance was largely decided through consultation between his father, the retired Emperor Go-Saga, and the Kamakura shogunate.
  2. 1251–1260Kyoto · Imperial CourtIn the 1250s Emperor Go-Fukakusa carried out ceremonial and ritual duties in Kyoto, changing the era names to Kenchō and Kōgen. Actual state affairs remained constrained by the retired Emperor Go-Saga and Kamakura regent Hōjō Tokiyori; the court and the shogunate maintained the existing court-shogunate system.
  3. 1260–1304Kyoto · Imperial CourtIn 1260 Go-Fukakusa abdicated in favor of his younger brother Emperor Kameyama and took the title of retired Emperor Go-Fukakusa. He thereafter long participated in cloistered rule, and together with the retired Emperor Go-Saga and the retired Emperor Kameyama formed complex imperial succession arrangements, planting the seeds for the later alternation of the two lines. He died in Kyoto in 1304.
