Timeline

  1. c. 1507–1545Rewa · North IndiaAs Sher Shah's second son he campaigned with the army, famed for endurance and skill with bow and horse, in contrast to his designated heir Adil Khan, who was idle by temperament. When Sher Shah died in a gunpowder explosion at Kalinjar in May 1545, he was nearby and was urgently summoned to the camp by nobles led by Isa Khan.
  2. c. 1545–1546Agra · North IndiaA council of nobles bypassed the elder brother and enthroned Jalal Khan on his military-administrative ability; he took the name Islam Shah upon accession. Adil Khan raised forces from Ranthambore and advanced on Agra; Islam Shah defeated him, and the brother fled east, never to pose a threat again. Some old generals had leaned toward Adil, prompting the new ruler to purge the nobility harshly.
  3. 1546–1554Delhi · North IndiaHe continued Sher Shah's land surveys, postal relays, and minting, bound the nobles more tightly to the sultan's command, and suppressed rebellions by the Niazi and other tribes. The exiled Mughal emperor Humayun made probing counterattacks without success. Islam Shah himself rarely expanded greatly, focusing on maintaining central authority; after his death in 1554 the succession collapsed and Sur princes slaughtered one another.
