Timeline

  1. c. 1580–1583Sakai and Kii teppō manufacturing sites · KinkiAfter the Oda regime controlled Kinai, Sakai merchant workshops and the Kii teppō craftsmen system matured, shifting from copying nanban imports to domestic mass production. Barrel forging, the lock mechanism (kinoko), and the wooden stock were clearly divided, with caliber and powder charge gradually standardized for bulk purchase by daimyō.
  2. 1583–1587Battlefields of central Japan · Chūbu regionFollowing the example of triple volleys at Nagashino (1575), by the 1580s daimyō commonly deployed teppō ashigaru at the front of spear formations or on battlements. Oda and Toyotomi forces used teppō to suppress defending archers while approaching behind siege trenches (dororyū), turning the gun from a novelty into standard siege equipment.
  3. c. 1587–1590Kyushu campaign and Kantō assembly grounds · KyushuDuring Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Kyushu campaign and preparations for the Odawara siege, teppō equipped a substantial share of ashigaru units. Mixed teppō-spear formations created a 'teppō—spear—cavalry' coordination, laying the firepower foundation for Japan's military unification in the 1590s and influencing firearms use in the subsequent Korean campaigns.
