Pietro Perugino
Perugino (Pietro Vannucci, c. 1446–1523), leading painter of the Umbrian school, famed for serene figures, clear perspective, and idealized landscape…
Timeline
- c. 1446–1480Florence · FlorenceHe grew up in Città della Pieve and later entered Florentine artistic circles. Vasari lists him among Verrocchio's pupils, sharing drawing and oil-medium experience with Leonardo and Lorenzo di Credi. In the 1470s he was already taking commissions such as the Adoration of the Magi in Perugia, bringing Florentine spatial construction back to Umbria.
- 1481–1482Sistine Chapel, Vatican · Sistine ChapelIn 1481–1482, at the invitation of Sixtus IV, he decorated the Sistine side walls alongside Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, and others, painting Christ Giving the Keys to Saint Peter on the north wall. The scene organizes deep perspective around a mid-ground triumphal arch plaza, becoming a direct model for Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin and other early masterpieces, and a visual manifesto of papal authority.
- 1483–1523Perugia · PerugiaAfter returning to central Italy he ran workshops in both Florence and Perugia. While painting the frescoes of Perugia's Collegio del Cambio around 1498–1500, Raphael was already forming his early style in his shop. With the High Renaissance, his sweet, repetitive formula gradually seemed outdated, yet he kept taking commissions, still painting at Trevi in 1521, dying of plague at Fontignano in 1523, burial place unknown.
