Timeline
- 1101Malatya · AnatoliaUpon learning that the 1101 crusader forces had entered Anatolia via Constantinople, Kilij Arslan I did not repeat his isolated response of the First Crusade; he led the Rum army east toward Malatya, proactively reconciling with Danishmendid Ghazi Gümüştekin, ending their territorial dispute and forming an alliance to jointly resist the Crusaders.
- 1101Merzifon (Mersivan) · Black Sea regionThe Rum sultan, the Danishmendids, and the Aleppo atabeg Ridwan's coalition devastated the main body of the 1101 Crusade at Merzifon in northern Anatolia through war of attrition and encirclement tactics. The Burgundian, Byzantine, German, and other crusader contingents fought separately and suffered heavy casualties, proving that coordinated Muslim coalitions could effectively block crusader land reinforcements.
- 1101Heraclea (Cybistra) · Central AnatoliaAfter his victory at Merzifon, Kilij Arslan swiftly wheeled around and annihilated the follow-up crusader force led by William II at Heraclea (Cybistra), nearly wiping out the relieving army. The 1101 Crusade thus ended, allowing the Sultanate of Rum to move its capital to Konya and consolidate its rule over Anatolia.
