Timeline
- c. 1500–1521Cusco · CuscoAround 1521, Cusco as the Tawantinsuyu capital gathered tribute and elites from the four provinces; the Coricancha Temple of the Sun and the Sacsayhuamán stone fortifications represented the peak of imperial architecture, while the mit'a corvée and quipu administrative systems sustained an empire of millions.
- c. 1527–1529Cusco · CuscoAfter Huayna Cápac died around 1527 without clearly naming an heir, Cusco enthroned Huáscar as Sapa Inca, while Atahualpa of the northern Quito faction refused to submit. Before the civil war broke out in 1529, Cusco remained the core of Huáscar's regime, but cracks had already appeared in imperial unity.
- 1530Cusco · CuscoIn 1530 the civil war between Huáscar and Atahualpa continued, with Cusco still the political center of Huáscar's camp; that same year the Spanish crown authorized Pizarro's expedition to Peru through the Capitulation of Toledo (signed in 1529), the empire's division creating a strategic window for foreign conquest, though the Spanish had not yet reached Cusco.
