Timeline

  1. 1371–1375Samarkand · TransoxianaAfter defeating Emir Hussein in 1370, Timur executed the old puppet khan Qabulsha and installed Soyurgatmish as khan of Western Chagatai. Because he was not a direct descendant of Genghis Khan, Timur ruled as regent under the title of güregen (imperial son-in-law), holding actual military and political power over Mawarannahr (Transoxiana).
  2. 1376–1380Transoxiana · TransoxianaWestern Chagatai was ruled by Timur through puppet khans, while eastern Moghulistan was controlled by independent rulers such as the khan of Ilbaligh; the two sides alternated between war and peace. This divided structure in the 1370s allowed Timur to concentrate Transoxiana's resources for expeditions against Persia, the Golden Horde, and elsewhere.
