Jin territory had by then shrunk to a corner around Caizhou, short of both grain and weapons. Ögedei's court agreed to ally with the Southern Song to destroy the Jin.
  2. 1233–1234Caizhou · HenanMongol forces and Song troops under Meng Gong and others closed in on Caizhou, cutting off outside aid. With grain exhausted in the city, the defenders tore down houses for firewood. Seeing no hope of breaking out, Aizong passed the throne to the imperial clansman Wanyan Chenglin on the day the city fell.
  3. 1234Caizhou · HenanAizong hanged himself in the Youlan Pavilion. Caizhou fell that same day, and Wanyan Chenglin, who had reigned less than a day, died in the chaotic fighting. The Jin dynasty, founded in 1115, was extinguished. The Southern Song immediately tried to contest Henan, clashing with the Mongols and opening the long Mongol-Song wars that followed.
