Timeline
- 1682Moscow Kremlin · MoscowAfter Feodor III's death, Empress Natalya's brothers and the favorite Matveev persuaded the patriarch to crown ten-year-old Peter, arguing Ivan was too frail to rule. The Miloslavsky faction dissented, and Sophia began contacting the Moscow Streltsy discontented over withheld pay.
- 1682Moscow Kremlin · MoscowOn May 15 a rider reached the Streltsy camp claiming the Naryshkins had killed Ivan. The Streltsy seized the Kremlin, killing Matveev, Dolgorukov, and other notables. On the 17th they re-entered the palace and executed Ivan Naryshkin and others before the young Peter. Looting then swept Moscow for days. Peter's later hatred of the Streltsy largely traces to this.
- 1682Moscow Kremlin · MoscowThe Streltsy petitioned for Ivan as first tsar and Peter as second tsar. On May 29 they again asked Sophia to serve as regent for the two young tsars, and the patriarch and boyars agreed. Both tsars were crowned in June. Sophia then ruled in practice for seven years, employing Golitsyn, concluding the Treaty of Nerchinsk, and joining the anti-Ottoman camp.
