Timeline

  1. 1101–1104East Water Gate, Kaifeng · KaifengJianghuai grain boats entered the Bian River from the canal and passed through the East Water Gate and other gates into the city to unload grain at official granaries. Around 1101, during the annual shipping peak, Bian River traffic flowed day and night, with river inspectors and laborers maintaining the channel.
  2. 1102–1107Chenliu (upper Bian River) · KaifengThe court's Bian River Embankment Commission was responsible for dredging, repairing levees, and installing wooden channel barriers to prevent overloaded merchant vessels from damaging the embankment. In the 1100s, corvée laborers were still conscripted for annual spring repairs, safeguarding grain transport and city defenses.
  3. 1104–1109Zhou Bridge, Kaifeng · KaifengNear Zhou Bridge was the busiest stretch of the Bian River, where merchant ships carrying grain, silk, porcelain, and passengers plied side by side. The scene of boats gathering, as recorded in the 1100s Dongjing Menghua Lu, was still daily life on this stretch, reflecting the deep integration of shipping and urban commerce.
  4. 1105–1110Zhengzhou (Bian River intake) · ZhengzhouThe Bian River's water supply depended on the Yellow River intake, where brushwood works and sluice gates regulated water volume. Between 1105 and 1110, Yellow River siltation required frequent dredging of the intake, a precondition for the water conditions of the entire Bian River shipping route.
