Timeline
- 1060Near Troyes · ChampagneKing Henry I of France was seriously injured after falling from his horse while hunting near Troyes and died shortly after. His eldest son, the seven-year-old Philip, became heir to the throne, and the Capetian dynasty faced a political vacuum with a child king's accession.
- 1060Reims · ChampagnePhilip was crowned King of the Franks at Reims, becoming the fourth monarch of the Capetian dynasty. Because of his young age, he could not independently handle vassal relations and foreign wars, and royal power actually had to rely on the regency group to operate.
- 1060–1066Paris · Île-de-FranceQueen Mother Anna of Kiev and Count Baldwin V of Flanders formed a dual regency, and pushed for Philip's betrothal to Bertha, daughter of Count Floris I of Holland (married in 1072), to consolidate the royal alliance with Flanders and Holland. During the regency, the royal house's ability to restrain powerful vassals like Normandy and Blois was limited, and royal power was relatively weak.
