Yellow River Management under the Ming
In the 1450s the Ming repeatedly committed labor and resources to Yellow River flood control and Grand Canal grain transport.
Timeline
- 1450–1453Around Cao County, Shandong · ShandongIn the early Jingtai era the Yellow River breached its banks several times in Shandong, flooding farmland and damaging the canal. The court ordered the vice ministers of Works and local officials to conscript laborers to build dikes, close breaches, and dredge the Huitong River and other canal waterways to restore grain transport.
- 1454–1457Xuzhou, Huai'an · JiangsuThe Yellow River and Grand Canal converge near Xuzhou and Huai'an, where floods often interrupted grain transport. The Ming court strengthened water-diversion works, dams, and the Qingkou works in this section to regulate relations among the Yellow River, Huai River, and canal systems—a key segment of the Ming grain-transport system.
- 1457–1459Yellow River flood areas of Henan and Shandong · Yellow River basinDespite court turmoil during the Tianshun reign, Yellow River management continued. The court kept mobilizing labor and disbursing treasury funds under existing Ming river-work institutions, building dikes and dredging channels in Henan, Shandong, and elsewhere to cope with flood-season waters and safeguard northern grain transport.
