Timeline

  1. 1120–1121Prémontré · PicardyWith the support of Bishop Bartholomew of Laon, Norbert chose the Premonstratensian valley, gathering companions to clear land and build an abbey. At Christmas 1121 the first group of about forty took vows under the Rule of Augustine, marking the formal establishment of the canons regular community.
  2. 1126–1134Magdeburg and Prémontré · SaxonyIn 1126 Pope Honorius II recognized the order, and Norbert became Archbishop of Magdeburg the same year. His disciple Hugh of Fosses became the first provost of Prémontré, gradually establishing a general chapter and unified constitutions that bound the houses of canons regular into a single order.
  3. 1130–1150Premonstratensian houses across Western Europe · Western EuropeEarly endowed houses such as Floreffe and Cappenberg drove the order's expansion into the Low Countries, Germany, and England. The White Canons Regular played roles in parish pastoral care, frontier mission, and noble worship, forming a reformed order network second only to the Benedictine-Cistercian system.
