- c. 517–531Narbonne · OccitaniaAfter Theodoric's regency ended, Amalaric ruled in his own right, governing the remaining Gallic lands and the Iberian Peninsula from Narbonne. He married Clotilde, daughter of the Frankish Clovis I and a Catholic, but forced her to abandon her faith and convert to Arianism, even mistreating her. Clotilde appealed to her brother, the Frankish king Childebert I, provoking a Frankish invasion. In 531 Amalaric was defeated near Barcelona and promptly assassinated.
