Timeline
- 1365Samarkand-Shahrisabz area · TransoxianaIn 1365 Il-Khay Haji led a large Moghulistan army west to retake Transoxiana and defeat Timur and Amir Husayn. Timur (leader of the Barlas) and Husayn (ruler of Balkh) formed an alliance, gathered forces from Samarkand and Shahrisabz, and marched north toward Tashkent to meet the invaders.
- 1365Tashkent · TransoxianaThe two armies met near Tashkent and the first day ended in stalemate. The next day Timur briefly repelled the Mongol forces, but Moghulistan general Sayyid Bey flanked him with his troops, dealing Timur a heavy blow; Husayn also retreated toward Samarkand. This was a rare field defeat in Timur's career, and the allied forces were forced to withdraw from the battlefield.
- 1365Samarkand · TransoxianaIl-Khay Haji pressed on to Samarkand and besieged the city. Timur and Husayn did not personally lead relief forces, but Timur's troops and the city's residents defended together, ultimately repelling the Moghulistan besiegers and forcing Il-Khay to retreat eastward. Samarkand did not fall, and Timur consolidated his control of the city.
- 1365Transoxiana · TransoxianaAfter repelling the Moghulistan invasion, Timur made Samarkand his political and military center, gradually extending control over Transoxiana's cities and becoming the region's most powerful warlord. His alliance with Husayn later gradually broke down, but the 1365 victory had already established Timur's dominance in the western Chagatai Khanate, paving the way for the complete unification of Transoxiana after the Battle of Balkh in 1370.
