Timeline

  1. 1198–1235Pagan · MandalayKyaswa was born into the Pagan royal house, son of King Tilominlo. After his father's accession in 1211 the kingdom entered a turning point from prosperity to decline. In the 1210s Kyaswa took part in court as crown prince; some sources say his brother Narathihapate served as regent, while works like the Mahayazawin record Kyaswa actually ruling from around 1219.
  2. 1235–1251Pagan · MyanmarAfter Tilominlo's death in 1235 Kyaswa formally acceded, taking the royal title Śrī Tribhuvanāditya Pavarapaṇḍita Dhammarāja. His reign was largely peaceful, but a century of expanding tax-exempt monastery lands had severely drained the treasury, leaving even pagoda construction short of funds. He attempted to reclaim some forest monastery lands but abandoned the effort under public pressure.
