Timeline

  1. 1532–1533Cajamarca · Cajamarca RegionAfter his capture, Atahualpa offered to fill a room about 6.7×5.2 meters, up to arm's reach height, as ransom, promising payment in gold and silver. Precious metals were rapidly shipped from across the Inca realm to Cajamarca; Spanish conquistadors including Hernando de Soto participated in verification and negotiation, but the promise of release was not honored once the ransom was collected.
  2. 1533Cajamarca · Cajamarca RegionIn July 1533 the Spanish held a formal trial of Atahualpa at Cajamarca, charging him with idolatry, fratricide (the killing of Huáscar), polygamy, and treason. A court of conquistadors sentenced him to death—initially by burning; Atahualpa agreed to be baptized in exchange for execution by garrote instead.
  3. 1533Main Plaza of Cajamarca · Cajamarca RegionAfter the trial, Atahualpa was strangled by garrote at Cajamarca. He had been baptized before execution, taking the name Francisco. The death of the supreme Inca ruler caused the empire's central authority to collapse, and the Spanish promptly installed a puppet emperor and accelerated the conquest of Peru.
