- c. 1040–1065Northern Song capital and Armaments Supervisor workshops · KaifengThe technical basis of the Divine Arm Crossbow came from the mature crossbow mechanism and arm-drawn crossbow systems since the pre-Qin era. After the Northern Song was founded, the Ministry of Works' Armaments Supervisor systematically improved the bow, mechanism, string force, and shooting method based on crossbow designs recorded in the Wujing Zongyao, laying the craft and form foundation for the Divine Arm Crossbow's standardization in the 1060s.
- c. 1068Kaifeng Prefecture, Northern Song capital · KaifengAccording to Song records, military artisan Li Hong and others made key improvements to crossbow designs, standardizing the so-called 'Divine Arm Crossbow': with a green sandalwood bow, a strong taut string, and a dedicated shooting method, its range and power far surpassed earlier crossbows. The court incorporated it into Armaments Supervisor standards and began issuing it to the imperial guard and frontier forces.
- c. 1070Song-Xia border (around Yongxing Military Circuit) · Song-Xia borderAfter issue, the Divine Arm Crossbow was quickly deployed to the northwestern frontier, forming crossbow formations with infantry and archers for long-range suppression and siege defense in Song-Xia border conflicts. Its long-range advantage compensated for Song cavalry weakness, making it a core long-range weapon of the Northern Song's mid-to-late frontier defense system.
