Timeline

  1. 1578–1585Southern Netherlands · Low CountriesAlessandro Farnese (Duke of Parma) took command of the Army of Flanders after 1578, using flexible diplomacy to divide the United Provinces while coordinating military advances, gradually recovering towns in southern Brabant and Flanders and setting the strategic tone for the army in the 1580s.
  2. 1584–1589Antwerp · BrabantFrom 1584 to 1585 the army captured Antwerp after a prolonged siege, cutting off Scheldt River shipping; thereafter under Parma's command, Spanish tercio formations working with engineers and artillery maintained tactical superiority in the sieges and field battles of the southern Netherlands.
  3. 1587–1590Madrid · CastileAfter the Duke of Parma died of illness in 1592, army command changed hands; meanwhile Philip II intervened in the Anglo-Spanish War, and delays in silver shipments from the Americas led to unpaid wages and frequent mutinies. Though the Army of Flanders still maintained roughly 60,000 men, its strategic offensive clearly slowed in the early 1590s.
