Timeline

  1. 1123–1125North China · North ChinaAfter the Covenant of the Sea, in 1123 the Jin general Zhang Jue surrendered Pingzhou to Song. The Jin army campaigned against him; the Song court executed a look-alike to fob them off, and finally executed Zhang Jue, yet still failed to avert war. In autumn 1125 Emperor Taizong of Jin ordered a full-scale invasion of Song. The Liao emperor Tianzuo was also captured that same year, but the fall of Shangjing occurred in 1120 and should not be written as 'Shangjing fell in February 1125.'
  2. 1125–1126Taiyuan · ShanxiZonghan's western army, advancing from the Yunzhong direction, was blocked at Datong and Taiyuan and failed to join the eastern army in 1125–1126. Zongwang's eastern army took successive prefectures in Hebei and in February 1126 crossed the river to besiege Kaifeng. Taiyuan held out until autumn 1126, not falling in 1125.
  3. 1125–1126Kaifeng · HenanBefore the eastern army approached Kaifeng, Emperor Huizong (Zhao Ji) abdicated to Crown Prince Zhao Huan (Emperor Qinzong) and fled. Wang Fu was the leading advocate of the policy of allying with Jin to destroy Liao, not a peace partisan. The first siege of Kaifeng was in February 1126; the Jingkang Incident (the city's fall and the emperors' captivity in the north) was in January 1127.
