Timeline

  1. 1539Chausa on the Ganges · BiharDuring Humayun's Bengal campaign, Sher Khan cut his links with Agra and seized key positions on the middle Ganges. Blocked at Chausa while returning west, the two armies faced each other for about two or three months. With the monsoon approaching, the Mughal camp was low-lying and short of food, while Sher Khan stalled with peace talks while completing a three-sided assault plan.
  2. 1539Mughal grand camp at Chausa · BiharSher Khan announced he was turning to attack a chieftain in Bihar, then wheeled back and burst into the Mughal camp from three directions amid monsoon downpours. The camp flooded, firearms were lost, and many soldiers drowned or were killed. Humayun, wounded, swam the Ganges with the help of a water-carrier and escaped—his first decisive defeat since accession.
  3. 1539Bihar–Bengal · IndiaAfter the battle Sher Khan adopted the title Farid al-Din Sher Shah and ruled Bihar and Bengal openly as sovereign. Humayun's remnants withdrew toward Agra to regroup, and the two sides decided matters again at Kannauj the following year. Chausa is thus seen as the starting point of the Sur dynasty's rise and the Mughals' first loss of North India.
