  1. 1621–1664Amritsar · PunjabBorn 1 April 1621 in Amritsar, youngest son of Guru Hargobind and Mata Nanki. In his youth he experienced his father's armed conflicts with the Mughals and the internal Sikh succession arrangements. After Hargobind's death the Guruship did not pass immediately to him; he lived a relatively reclusive life at Bakala and elsewhere until Har Krishan died in 1664.
  2. 1664–1675Anandpur · PunjabRecognized as ninth Guru around 1664. He founded Chak Nanki (later Anandpur) in the Shivalik foothills and contributed some 115-116 hymns to the Adi Granth. During his travels in northern India his son Gobind was born in Patna in 1666. Traditional narratives emphasize his mediation of the Assam war and his sheltering of religiously oppressed communities.
  3. 1675Delhi · DelhiIn 1675 Kashmiri pandits and others asked him to intervene against forced conversions under Aurangzeb. He went to Delhi, refused to convert to Islam, and was executed on 11 November. Sikh companions with him were also killed. This deeply affected nine-year-old Gobind and became a key memory in the later identity of the Khalsa armed community.
