Timeline

  1. 1499Gallipoli · Gallipoli PeninsulaKemal Reis set out from Constantinople early in the year with part of the fleet, joined in July the grand fleet of some 260 ships under Kapudan Pasha Küçük Davud, and sailed south from Gallipoli, aiming to cut off Venetian bases on the Greek coast and support the capture of Lepanto.
  2. 1499Cape Zonchio · Ionian SeaOn August 12, 20, 22, and 25, 1499, the Ottoman fleet engaged the Venetian fleet several times off Zonchio–Sapientza. Venetian commander-in-chief Antonio Grimani's disordered command failed to prevent the Ottomans from entering the Gulf of Lepanto. The Ottomans gained command of the Ionian Sea, and Lepanto was soon taken by combined land and sea operations.
  3. 1500Modon · PeloponneseAfter Lepanto fell in autumn 1499, Kemal Reis and others continued operations along the Peloponnese coast. In 1500 the Ottomans won again after the Second Battle of Lepanto (also called the Battle of Modon), and Modon, Coron, and Navarino successively fell into Ottoman hands. Kemal Reis was not, however, promoted to Kapudan Pasha as a result.
