Timeline

  1. 702–712Luoyang · Henan PrefectureIn 702 CE Wu Zetian decreed the establishment of the military examination, ordering the prefectures to recommend men skilled in arms, tested in long-riding, saber riding, lance riding, foot archery, and foot lance, with successful candidates receiving office. This brought military talent selection into the state examination system, breaking the monopoly of hereditary privilege on military posts, and was an institutional innovation.
  2. 712–755Chang'an · Jingzhao PrefectureUnder Emperor Xuanzong in the Kaiyuan and Tianbao eras the state was strong and the military examination was held regularly, emphasizing mounted archery and weapon skills, with additional categories such as "outstanding talent" and "knowledge of military law." Famous generals like Guo Ziyi came from the military examination, and the system became one channel supplementing the fubing-recruitment talent pool.
  3. 755–800Chang'an · Jingzhao PrefectureAfter the An Lushan Rebellion, regional governors grew powerful and military authority localized, weakening the impact of central military examinations on actual combat strength. Though military examinations continued under Dezong and Xianzong, the number of successful candidates and career prospects lagged behind the civil track, and military men mostly entered office through merit or hereditary privilege. By the late eighth century the military examination was no longer the main channel for Tang military talent, its symbolic significance outweighing its practical selection function.
