1570Manila Bay · PhilippinesLegazpi led a Spanish expedition northward from Cebu, clashing with local Muslim polities, and in May 1570 launched the first attack on the Maynila settlement along Manila Bay.
1571Manila · ManilaIn 1571 Legazpi attacked and captured Manila again. After burning the old settlement, he rebuilt a Spanish-style fort and city at the mouth of the Pasig River, establishing municipal and ecclesiastical institutions and designating Manila as the center of the Philippine colonial government.
