Timeline

  1. 1385–1386Wawel Cathedral, Kraków · PolandThe Union of Kreva of August 14, 1385 provided for the marriage of Grand Duke Jogaila of Lithuania to Queen Jadwiga of Poland and his acceptance of Catholicism. In 1386 Jogaila was baptized and crowned King of Poland as Władysław II, beginning Jagiellonian rule over Poland and entering Poland and Lithuania into a personal union.
  2. 1386–1568Kraków · PolandThe Jagiellonian kings used Kraków as their coronation and political center, becoming an important Central European political entity through the personal union with Lithuania. Battles such as the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 consolidated their advantage over the Teutonic Knights. The code and town policies of Casimir III (the last Piast king, 1333–1370) are a legacy of the preceding dynasty, not of the Jagiellonians themselves.
  3. 1569–1572Lublin · PolandThe Union of Lublin of July 1, 1569 united the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1572 Sigismund II Augustus died without an heir, ending the male line of the Jagiellonian dynasty in Poland and ushering in an elective monarchy.
