Timeline
- 568–580Pannonia · PannoniaAfter Avar khagan Bayan led his people out of the Turkic alliance and migrated into Pannonia, they brought steppe lamellar armor craft. Plates were made of iron or hardened leather, rectangular or oval in shape, laced vertically with leather thongs and overlapping like fish scales, balancing flexibility with protection against slashing, and became the signature equipment of Avar elite cavalry.
- 580–600Balkan frontier · BalkansMaurice's Strategikon and Theophylact Simocatta's History detail how Avar warriors wore lamellar armor and used composite bows and spears. In fighting the Avars, Byzantium captured and imitated lamellar armor, driving a shift in imperial cavalry equipment from chain mail toward combined use of lamellar and scale armor.
- c. 590–600Central Europe–Balkan corridor · BalkansBy the late sixth century, Avar lamellar armor spread through war booty, trade and vassalage to Byzantine frontier troops and the Germanic peoples of Central Europe. Archaeological finds confirm lamellar armor of the same period excavated from Pannonian and Balkan tombs, showing that steppe armor craft had entered the early medieval European military equipment lineage.
