Timeline
- 1571Off Lepanto (Naupactus) · Ionian SeaThe Holy League assembled over two hundred galleys from Spain, Venice, the Papal States, Genoa, and others, and under Don John's command routed the Ottoman fleet in the Gulf of Lepanto, winning the largest Mediterranean naval battle of the 16th century and bringing the alliance to its military and prestige peak.
- 1572–1573Eastern Mediterranean · LevantAfter the great victory at Lepanto, disputes among the allies over sharing war costs and spoils intensified: Spain insisted on an expedition to North Africa, while Venice focused on recovering eastern islands. In March 1573 Venice made a separate peace with the Ottomans, depriving the league of its main naval power; the joint fleet could hardly be reassembled, and the Holy League degenerated from a military alliance into a loose diplomatic framework.
- 1573Constantinople and Venice · Ottoman EmpireAfter Venice made a separate peace, Spain and the Papal States maintained an anti-Ottoman posture (such as the 1573 expedition to Tunis), but without Venetian galley support the Holy League existed in name only, and the Mediterranean balance of power returned to interstate competition.
