Timeline

  1. 1251–1255Vienna · ViennaIn 1251 Otakar II consolidated control over Moravia; after acceding in 1253 he rapidly replaced the Babenberg dynasty through a combination of force and diplomacy. After conquering Austria in 1255 he established his capital in Vienna, pushing Bohemian power up the Danube and becoming the dominant force reshaping Central Europe's map in the 1250s.
  2. 1256–1260Graz · StyriaIn 1256–1257 Otakar II further annexed Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola, his power reaching the Adriatic Sea. Hungary's King Béla IV strongly opposed this, and the two sides clashed repeatedly on the Styrian frontier in the late 1250s. Using Vienna and Graz as bases, Otakar reformed administration, minted gold coins, and strengthened control over his newly built 'Central European empire'.
