Timeline

  1. 1211–1212Southern Germany · GermanySince the imperial throne fell vacant in 1198, the Hohenstaufen and Welf factions fought continuous civil wars, with private feuds (Fehde) and castle plunder severely disrupting trade and agriculture. As Frederick II moved north, he urgently needed royal authority to restrain armed conflict and win recognition of his new kingship from the princes.
  2. 1212Mainz · Rhineland-PalatinateAt the coronation court assembly (Hoftag) in Mainz, Frederick II and the attending ecclesiastical and secular princes jointly swore the imperial Land Peace, forbidding private warfare, plundering of merchants, and attacks on churches for a specified period. This followed the tradition of the Mainzer Landfrieden since the 11th century, but was issued in the form of a limited-term oath.
  3. 1213–1215Holy Roman Empire · GermanyThe 1212 Land Peace was mainly effective in southern Germany under Frederick's control and failed to fully halt the armed actions of Otto's faction princes. However, the practice of establishing peace obligations through legislation at court assemblies provided an institutional precedent for the permanent imperial Land Peace of Mainz in 1235 and the later Ewiger Landfriede.
