Timeline
- 1644–1651Provinces of the Qing dynasty · ChinaAfter Qing forces crossed the pass, large numbers of surrendered Ming troops and Han soldiers from various regions were reorganized into the Green Standard, with the battalion (ying) as the basic unit and the green banner as its emblem, forming a Han regular army system distinct from the Eight Banners. Initially the organization was relatively loose, and the garrison distribution spread out gradually as the campaigns advanced.
- 1661–1672Provinces of the Qing dynasty · ChinaIn the early Kangxi reign, the court systematically reformed the Green Standard, establishing a hierarchical system of governor-general–lieutenant-governor/commandant–battalion-post that separated troop command from troop deployment; the authorized strength and pay systems of the provincial Green Standards were standardized, forming a nationwide garrison network that became the main military force for maintaining local order.
- 1673–1681Southwest and South China provinces · South ChinaDuring the Revolt of the Three Feudatories, the Green Standard was mobilized on a large scale as the main fighting force; some units defected to the rebel feudatories, while others loyal to the Qing court fought on the battlefield. The Kangxi emperor used the opportunity to purge unreliable commanders and reorganize the Green Standard after the war, further strengthening direct control over the battalions. This war established the Green Standard's central position in the Qing military system.
- 1840–1895Provinces of the Qing dynasty · ChinaThe Green Standard's poor combat performance was fully exposed in the Opium Wars; militia forces such as the Xiang and Huai Armies rose after the Taiping Rebellion and gradually displaced the Green Standard. After the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95, the Qing court pursued the construction of a modern army, and the Green Standard system existed in name only before finally being abolished.
