Timeline
- 1219Kamakura · KantōShōgun Minamoto no Sanetomo was assassinated while visiting Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, ending the Minamoto shogunal line and leaving the shogunate's highest nominal office vacant. Hōjō Yasutoki, as regent, quickly handled the aftermath, suppressing Yukihira and stabilizing internal order.
- 1219Hōjō Tokusō residence (Kamakura) · KantōHōjō Yasutoki no longer actively promoted new Minamoto shoguns; instead, the Tokusō main line monopolized the regent (shikken) post long-term, with shogunate affairs, gokenin control, and judicial rulings all under Hōjō control. Thereafter shoguns were often imperial princes or distant Minamoto branches serving as puppets, real power resting with the Tokusō regent, creating the Kamakura norm of 'shogun in name, regent in power.'
