  1. 1184–1190Marrakesh · MarrakeshHis father Abu Ya'qub Yusuf I was killed at the siege of Santarém on 29 July 1184; on 10 August, after escorting the body to Seville, Ya'qub was proclaimed caliph, succeeding his brother. He was then delayed in North Africa by the war against the Banu Ghaniya before returning to Iberia.
  2. 1191Algarve · AlgarveThe 1190 campaign against Portugal was frustrated by reinforcements passing through during the Third Crusade. In spring 1191 Ya'qub campaigned again, first taking Alcácer do Sal and other places, then besieging Silves; the garrison surrendered the town in late July with Sancho I's permission, after which Ya'qub concluded a five-year peace with Sancho. His opponent was Portugal's Sancho I, not Pedro Afonso, son of Alfonso I.
  3. 1195–1199Alarcos · La ManchaOn 18 July 1195 he crushed Alfonso VIII's Castilian army at Alarcos, thereafter taking the title al-Mansur ('the Victorious'). He died at Marrakesh on 23 January 1199 and was buried at Tinmal; his son Muhammad al-Nasir succeeded him.
