Timeline
- 1020–1024Nishapur · NishapurSeljuk Turkic nomads moved south from the steppe, clashing repeatedly with Ghaznavid frontier forces along the line from Nishapur to Merv. Though Ghaznavid nominal suzerainty held, actual control over border herds steadily weakened.
- 1025–1028Merv · MaryMahmud committed large forces to Indian expeditions, leaving Khorasan garrisons undermanned with long supply lines. Strategic points such as Merv suffered frequent raids, and local governors could not simultaneously counter nomadic raids and vassal rebellions, leaving the eastern defense passive.
- 1028–1029Khorasan · KhorasanBy the late 1020s, the Seljuk alliance was unifying under Tughril, and Ghaznavid vassal tribes defected to the Seljuks. The reorganization of Khorasan's political map accelerated, accumulating strength for larger-scale military confrontation after the sultan's change in the 1030s.
