Timeline

  1. c. 1440–1461capital · North ChinaEntered the palace at age four and was later sent by Empress Dowager Wang to serve Zhu Jianshen, then crown prince. During the Jingtai era the crown prince was deposed and confined to the Southern Palace; Wan Zhen'er cared for his daily needs in difficult circumstances, forming a deep attachment with Jianshen that transcended their formal status.
  2. 1462–1464Eastern Palace · North ChinaAfter Jianshen was restored as crown prince, Wan Zhen'er's standing rose steadily; despite being older and formerly a female official, she retained the crown prince's affection. During this period she began to influence Eastern Palace personnel through inner-court networks, laying the groundwork for her interference in government after his accession.
  3. 1464–1470Forbidden City · North ChinaAfter Xianzong ascended the throne, Lady Wan enjoyed unrivaled favor in the harem; though not initially established as noble consort, she in fact controlled the inner court. In the 1460s she interfered in harem appointments and marginalized rivals, and through eunuchs such as Liang Fang influenced court affairs, creating a pattern of 'imperial favorites interfering in government' that drew growing criticism from officials and the public.
