Timeline

  1. c. -1200–-1100Kaman-Kalehöyük · AnatoliaMicroscopic analysis of early iron artifacts excavated at sites such as Kaman-Kalehöyük in central Anatolia shows that local metalworkers could carry out limited-scale smelting and carburizing experiments during the Bronze Age; iron objects varied in quality, still coexisted with meteoric iron products, and no large-scale iron economy had yet formed.
  2. c. -1100–-900Levant and Near East · LevantAfter the political collapse and reorganization of trade networks around 1200 BCE, knowledge of iron smelting spread slowly from Anatolia toward the Levant, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. Iron references in texts and archaeological remains increased markedly, but bronze still held an important place in tools and weapons.
  3. c. -900–-500Eastern Mediterranean and western Anatolia · AnatoliaBy the mid-first millennium BCE, iron farm tools, weapons, and everyday objects were widespread in the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean. Iron output rose in Phrygia, Lydia, and the Greek world, and iron-smelting technology became a foundational capability supporting agricultural expansion and military organization.
