Timeline

  1. 1534–1540Lombardy and Naples · ItalyCharles V, following Genoese regulations, established the first official tercios in Lombardy, Naples, and Sicily, organizing several companies into standing mixed regiments of about 2,500 men. Pikemen formed the majority with arquebusiers placed on the flanks, and the Italian Wars proved their ability to suppress Swiss pike squares and French cavalry.
  2. 1550–1565Italian and Spanish Netherlands frontier · EuropeFrom the 1550s the tercio further refined manga (firing sleeve) maneuvering, with the proportion of firearms gradually rising, each company often containing a dozen or more heavy arquebusiers. The formation shifted from a dense wall of pikes to a flexible formation capable of rotating front and rear to fire, accumulating practical experience against French artillery and breastwork positions.
  3. 1566–1580Spanish Netherlands (Flanders) · Low CountriesAfter the Dutch Revolt of 1566, several tercios reinforced Flanders overland via the 'Spanish Road,' becoming the main force of commanders such as the Duke of Alba in suppressing the revolt. At this time the Spanish army consisted almost entirely of tercios, each regiment numbering about 1,500–4,000 men, coordinating with the bastioned fortress system in sieges and field battles.
