1077Nicaea · BithyniaNikephoros Botaneiates, strategos of the Anatolic Theme, revolted in Anatolia with Seljuk support and defeated an imperial army at Nicaea. Nikephoros Bryennios, doux of Dyrrhachium, was simultaneously proclaimed emperor in the Balkans.
1078Constantinople · Byzantine EmpireAfter Bryennios's brother John failed to take Constantinople by siege, the capital's nobility turned to Botaneiates. Michael VII abdicated and became a monk; Botaneiates entered the city and was crowned Nikephoros III.
1078Kalavrye · GreeceBryennios refused to accept Botaneiates and marched on Constantinople with the Balkan field army. The young general Alexios Komnenos, sent by the new regime, outmaneuvered and defeated Bryennios, who was captured and blinded.
