Timeline
- 1101–1105Cologne · RhinelandAround 1101 Henry V was already co-ruling the empire with his father, building political capital in the assemblies of the German princes. In 1103 he joined the movement distancing himself from his father, and in 1105 at Cologne he declared Henry IV deposed, gradually taking control of the empire's civil and military affairs.
- 1106–1110Rome · Papal StatesAfter his father's death in 1106 he ruled alone, and from 1107 to 1110 he repeatedly negotiated with Pope Paschal II over the investiture of bishops, with both sides deadlocked. Henry V pressed with military force, setting the stage for his personal campaign to Rome in 1111, the imprisonment of the pope, and his coronation, as the imperial-papal conflict entered a new phase.
