  1. 1444–1481Salamanca · SalamancaNebrija was born in Lebrija near Seville, studied at Salamanca, and then furthered his studies at the Royal College of Bologna. On returning he taught at Salamanca, publishing Introductiones Latinae in 1481, correcting medieval school Latin teaching with humanist methods and quickly becoming a widely adopted textbook in Iberia.
  2. 1481–1492Salamanca · SalamancaAfter the success of his Latin grammar he turned descriptive grammar to the vernacular. On 18 August 1492 the Gramática de la lengua castellana was printed in Salamanca, dedicated to Queen Isabella of Castile. The preface argued that language and empire arise together and flourish and decline together, and explained that grammar could regulate language and teach newly incorporated peoples. That same year he also issued a Latin-Spanish dictionary.
  3. 1493–1522Alcalá de Henares · AlcaláIn the 1490s he continued compiling Spanish-Latin vocabularies and became embroiled in disputes over biblical textual criticism. In the early 16th century he moved to Alcalá, continuing to teach classical languages in the university environment founded by Cisneros. He died at Alcalá in 1522, and his grammars and dictionaries became important models for later grammatical compilation of indigenous languages in the Americas and the Philippines.
