Athanagild (c. 510–567) was king of the Visigothic Kingdom, reigning 554–567.…

Timeline

  1. 551–554Seville · Andalusiac. 551 Athanagild rose against King Agila I in the south of the Iberian Peninsula and appealed to the Byzantine emperor Justinian I for aid. Byzantine troops under the general Liberius landed in Iberia and helped Athanagild defeat Agila; Agila was killed by his own men in 554, and Athanagild took the throne.
  2. 554–567Toledo · Castilla-La ManchaRuling from Toledo, Athanagild spent his reign trying to recover the southeastern coastal regions occupied by Byzantium (today's southeastern Spanish coast), but the Byzantine foothold was never removed. He adjusted foreign policy by marrying his two daughters Brunhilda and Galswintha to two Merovingian kings of Francia, deepening diplomatic ties between the Visigoths and the Franks. Athanagild died of illness at Toledo in late 567 without a male heir, and a struggle for the throne followed.
