The Irish Pale in the 1460s

Type Event Region Ireland Time 1461–1470

In the 1460s, England's core of rule in Ireland, the Pale, maintained limited authority around Dublin.

Timeline

  1. 1461–1464Dublin · LeinsterEngland's civil war spilled into Ireland: Thomas FitzGerald, Earl of Kildare, leaned toward the Yorkists, while the Butler family had Lancastrian ties. In the early 1460s Pale nobles adjusted their loyalties with each change of the English throne, and Dublin Castle became the center of local factional maneuvering.
  2. 1465–1468Drogheda · LeinsterThe Irish Parliament met several times at Drogheda between 1465 and 1468, passing taxation and defense statutes. The Earl of Kildare effectively controlled the Pale's administration and military; the English crown, preoccupied with civil war, could not intervene effectively, and the Pale nobility's self-governance deepened.
  3. 1466–1470Pale border · LeinsterIn the 1460s Gaelic Irish chieftains (such as the O'Lalors and O'Connors) continuously pressed the Pale's borders, with raids and territorial encroachment intensifying. Lacking English reinforcements, the Pale authorities defended with local militias and a chain of castles, and English control over Ireland shrank further to a narrow eastern strip.
