Hairspring and Balance Wheel Timekeeping
The hairspring and balance wheel is a portable timekeeping regulator that constrains the balance wheel's oscillation with a spiral spring.…
Timeline
- 1675Paris · ParisHuygens mounted a spiral spring on the balance wheel, giving portable timepieces isochronism close to that of a pendulum clock, and commissioned Isaac Turrier to make a pocket watch. He informed Oldenburg in London and published in the Journal des sçavans in Paris, bringing the spiral hairspring into the public technical record. The encyclopedia notes that the key lay in the spring taking a spiral form, not merely in elastic constraint.
- 1675–1676London · LondonHooke had studied the law of elasticity since the 1660s and claimed he had already applied springs to regulating watches, even filing a riddling claim with the Society. After Huygens's scheme was published, he accused the Society's secretary of passing the news to Paris. Existing evidence shows Hooke discussed elastic regulation earlier, but the manufacturable spiral hairspring scheme belongs first to Huygens's 1674–1675 design.
- 1675–1701Western European watchmaking · Western EuropeThe hairspring reduced pocket-watch error from the order of a quarter-hour to minutes, working in concert with the escapement. In the 18th century, the watch trades of London and Paris made it a mass-producible core component, and it also provided the tradition of a portable oscillator for later marine chronometers such as Harrison's. Pendulum clocks still served observatories, but everyday precision time could now be carried in a pocket.
- 1801European and global watchmaking · EuropeTemperature-compensating hairsprings, the detent, and the tourbillon of the 19th–20th centuries all rest on the same regulating principle. After quartz watches became widespread, the hairspring and balance wheel left mass timekeeping, but remain a core craft of mechanical horology and museum restoration, and can be seen as the long-term technical legacy of the Huygens–Hooke dispute.
