Timeline
- 1523–1524Gulf of Honduras · HondurasExplorers such as Gil González Dávila had previously ventured along the coast of the Gulf of Honduras. Around 1524, Spanish forces came into contact and conflict with local groups such as the Pech and Lenca, contesting control of the coast.
- 1524Trujillo · HondurasOlid set sail from Mexico in January 1524 and landed on the north coast of Honduras in early May. After founding Trujillo, he openly defied Cortés and conquered Naco, Tenjo, and other places to the west. Cortés sent his cousin Francisco de las Casas with about 150 men to bring him to heel.
- 1524–1526Naco · HondurasLas Casas's fleet was wrecked in a storm near Trujillo, and the survivors were captured by Olid and imprisoned with González at Naco. The two wounded Olid when he let his guard down and, after a hasty trial, had him cut his throat in the Naco plaza (Díaz records beheading; Herrera records a mutiny of soldiers who killed him). Those who captured and killed Olid were Las Casas and González, not Alvarado (Alvarado did not enter Honduras until 1536).
