  1. 1657Chyhyryn · UkraineOn July 27, 1657 Bohdan Khmelnytsky died of illness in the Cossack capital Chyhyryn at about 62 years of age. Before his death he convened a rada and tried to designate his son Yurii as successor to the hetmanate, but the military elders were divided over the arrangement.
  2. 1657Left-bank Ukraine · UkraineAfter Khmelnytsky's death, Yurii Khmelnytsky, being young and lacking prestige, was quickly superseded as de facto leader by Zaporozhian military secretary Ivan Vyhovsky. Cossack factions fought over the hetmanate, and the Ruin (Руїна) began.
