  1. 1533–1575Szerbászárvár (Szilvásvárad) · TransylvaniaOf the Hungarian noble Báthory family, he ruled Transylvania squeezed between Habsburg and Ottoman powers, consolidating the principality's position through military and diplomatic means and building the prestige that later won him the Polish crown.
  2. 1576–1586Kraków · PolandCrowned after his 1576 marriage to Anna Jagiellon, he reorganized the Polish army and recovered border fortresses from Russia in the Livonian War, signing the Treaty of Jam Zapolski in 1582; he carried out fiscal and military reforms and died at Grodno in 1586.
