Timeline

  1. 1470–1475Karaman · TurkeyMehmed II continued integrating Anatolian beyliks, pressuring Turkic polities under Mamluk protection such as Karaman. Ottoman encroachment on Karaman in the 1470s made the Mamluks feel their northern barrier weakening, and the Cairo court's vigilance toward Ottoman expansion rose markedly.
  2. 1472–1478Cilicia · TurkeyScattered conflicts and raids occurred in the Cilician mountains and along the Dulkadir border. The Mamluks supported local forces to contain the Ottomans, while the Ottomans pressed toward Syria through their vassal the Bey of Dulkadir. Though the friction did not escalate into full-scale war, diplomatic relations steadily deteriorated.
  3. 1478–1480Cairo · EgyptIn the late 1470s envoys exchanged frequently but with mutual distrust: the Mamluks protested Ottoman annexation of buffer states, while the Ottomans accused the Mamluks of sheltering hostile forces. The Aq Qoyunlu invasion in the east tied down some Ottoman forces but failed to ease southern tensions. By 1480, relations between the two states were on the brink of war.
